John DudaAfter watching the first American cyclist, Greg LeMond, win back to back Tour de France races in ’89 and ’90, I was exuberant about cycling, working at a bike shop and finding energy in the peace and solace that is the solo ride and singular test of endurance. One Sunday ABC Wide World of Sports was highlighting a very different achievement, the Race Across America. I was hooked, but I never did race a bike, only dreamed as only teenagers do. Since then, there have been many marathons, ultra-marathons, triathlons, and even an IRONMAN and the Leadville 100 Foot Race. For nearly 17 years I’ve run a 200-mile relay race with 11 other hearty souls, but nothing like the challenge that is RAAM as a relay. For me, I have found a new paradigm in endurance racing, a shared experience with others; it strengthens my fortitude, we rise together and conquer the challenge.
Born in West Virginia, having grown up in the Midwest, and during my adult life called some of the world’s greatest cities home, I returned to the mountains this time in Colorado for the last 13 years and likely the rest of my life. |
